FAQs

Patio Furniture

If you are considering purchasing new patio furniture for your deck or pool area, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Which way does the sun move around your yard. Good to know if you want to take advantage of peak tanning hours, or if you want to create a shaded area with an umbrella.
  • If you have a pool, is it fresh water or salt water? Each type will have an effect of the cushions or sling material. Knowing this up front may save you some heart ache later!
  • Do you have an area for dining, or just looking for lounge-type furniture?
  • Do you have a fire pit that needs seating?
  • Do you want furniture that is “low” maintenance, or “no” maintenance?

Here are some things to keep in mind when looking at patio furniture. Ask your salesperson to go into detail when explaining these questions to you!

  1. Is the furniture weather-resistant?
  2. How do I maintain and clean the furniture?
  3. Does the furniture come with any warranties or guarantees?
  4. Is the furniture easy to assemble?
  5. What is the weight capacity of the furniture?
  6. Are there any matching accessories or additional pieces available?
  7. Can the cushions covers be removed and washed?
  8. Is the furniture stackable or foldable for easy storage?
  9. What is the return policy if the furniture doesn’t meet my expectations?

How do I clean my cushions?

Cleaning your patio furniture cushions can help keep them looking fresh and extend their lifespan. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you:

  1. Vacuum: Use a vacuum with an upholstery attachment to remove loose dirt, dust, and debris. Pay special attention to seams and crevices
  2. Prepare Cleaning Solution: Mix 1 tablespoon of dish detergent with 1/4 cup of Borax in a bucket of water
  3. Scrub: Use a soft-bristle brush dipped in the cleaning solution to scrub the entire surface of the cushions. Focus on stained areas and let the solution soak for at least five minutes
  4. Rinse: Use a garden hose on medium-high pressure to rinse off the cushions thoroughly. Avoid using a pressure washer as it might damage the fabric
  5. Dry: Squeeze out excess water, then blot with a clean towel. Prop the cushions up vertically and let them air-dry completely in a sunny spot

For Removable Covers

  1. Machine Wash: If your cushions have removable covers, check the care label and wash them in the washing machine on a gentle cycle. Use mild detergent and let them air-dry completely before putting them back on

Stain Removal

  1. Mildew and Mold: Mix 1 cup of white vinegar with 1 gallon of water. Spray the solution on the affected areas, scrub with a brush, and rinse thoroughly
  2. Tough Stains: For stubborn stains, use an enzyme-based stain remover or a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water. Apply the solution, let it sit for a few minutes, scrub, and rinse

Maintenance Tips

  1. Regular Cleaning: Clean your cushions at least once or twice a year to keep them in good condition.
  2. Storage: Store cushions in a dry place during off-seasons to prevent mold and mildew.
  3. Protective Covers: Use protective covers to shield your cushions from the elements when not in use.

Can I use bleach to clean my cushions?

Yes, you can use bleach on patio cushions, but it’s important to do so with caution to avoid damaging the fabric or causing discoloration. Here are some tips to safely use bleach on your patio cushions:

Steps for Using Bleach

  1. Check the Care Label: Before using bleach, check the care label on your cushions to ensure they are bleach safe. If the label advises against bleach, use an alternative cleaner.
  2. Perform a Spot Test: Test a small, inconspicuous area of the cushion with a diluted bleach solution to check for any adverse reactions or color fading.
  3. Prepare the Bleach Solution: Mix 1/4 cup of bleach with 1 gallon of water. This dilution helps to minimize the risk of damage.
  4. Apply the Solution: Use a spray bottle to apply the bleach solution to the stained areas. Let it sit for a few minutes, but do not let it dry on the fabric.
  5. Scrub and Rinse: Gently scrub the area with a soft brush, then rinse thoroughly with a garden hose to remove all bleach residue.
  6. Dry Completely: Allow the cushions to air-dry completely in a sunny spot to prevent mold and mildew growth.

Alternatives to Bleach

  1. If you prefer not to use bleach, consider using white vinegar or an enzyme-based cleaner for a gentler approach.
